The downside to piecework is that the tendency for quantity over quality is a powerful force, from the employee's perspective. And they know it won't be their name on the lawsuits.>>>

Prevailing wage work is much different then residential in that quality control is the key issue. Because of insurance issues now days, contractors are going over your work to see that the specs are follow, engineer gets involved as well as he is usually the spec writer. There are also middle management company's that bid the job and hire the roofing contractors. They play advocates for the owner, and its an additional and more thorough quality control measure. The keys to success in a piece work system is the foreman, it is imperative that every thing is done correctly or he will be responsible to fix the problem, thus losing the bonus money.

Working on prevailing wage jobs were a privilege. The company that I worked for never allow a regular crew to run a job. The crew would be comprised of the top foremen and shinglers who can maintain quality and quantity at the same time...Not impossible to do...Requires a great mix of people.>>>
